Starbucks Ditches Extra Charge for Dairy-Free Milks: A Win for Plant-Based Options
Starting November 7, Starbucks will no longer require an upcharge for plant-based milks. This exciting change coincides with the launch of their holiday menu, as announced in a recent press release.
No More Upcharge for Non-Dairy Milk at Starbucks
The new policy applies to all non-dairy milk options, including soy, oat, almond, and coconut milk. This is great news for those who prefer or require a plant-based alternative. Swapping dairy for plant-based milk is the second most popular customization at Starbucks, right after adding an extra shot of espresso.
Customers Saving Money with Dairy-Free Options
According to Starbucks, removing the upcharge could save customers up to 10% on their beverages, making it easier for people to tailor their drinks to personal preferences. Brian Niccol, Starbucks Chairman and CEO, commented, “Core to the Starbucks Experience is the ability to customize your beverage to make it yours. By removing the extra charge for non-dairy milk, we’re embracing all the ways our customers enjoy their Starbucks.” Niccol added, “This is just one of many changes we’ll make to ensure a visit to Starbucks is worth it every time.”
Where the Policy Applies: Corporate Locations Only
It’s important to note that this new policy only applies to Starbucks locations owned by the corporation. Unfortunately, privately owned satellite locations may still charge extra for plant-based options. Be sure to check with your local store before placing an order.
Class-Action Lawsuits Against Starbucks and Other Coffee Chains
Legal Pushback on Non-Dairy Milk Upcharges
This change follows a March lawsuit filed by lactose-intolerant customers in Fresno, California. The $5 million class-action suit argued that Starbucks’ upcharges on non-dairy milk violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and California civil rights laws. A similar lawsuit was filed against Starbucks in Florida in 2022, though the plaintiffs later dismissed it voluntarily, with no public settlement details available.
Other coffee chains, including Dunkin’ Donuts, have also faced lawsuits over upcharges for non-dairy milk. In 2023, Dunkin’ was sued over alleged ADA violations due to charges for plant-based milk, which some people rely on due to lactose intolerance. Arlene Kanter, a prominent disability law expert, stated, “If a person qualifies as a person with a disability, they’re entitled to an accommodation or modification—such as non-dairy milk—without additional charges.”
A Win for Animal Rights Advocates and Dairy Industry Critiques
Ethical and Humane Choice for Coffee Consumers
Starbucks’ decision to remove the extra charge for dairy-free milk options is also a win for people who choose plant-based options for ethical reasons. Millions of cows endure daily suffering in the dairy industry, prompting consumers to make more humane choices. By removing the upcharge on non-dairy milk, Starbucks makes it easier for people to make compassionate decisions that align with their values and their budgets. Small steps like these create a ripple effect, promoting a shift toward ethical consumerism and animal rights worldwide. It just became easier and cheaper to ditch dairy.
