Compassion Creates Change: About FARM’s Compassionate Activist Network

Most people already care about animals. What they need to help themselves align their actions, with their values, is encouragement, support, and positive experiences. That belief is at the heart of FARM’s Compassionate Activist Network (CAN). CAN is a growing community of advocates who are helping create a kinder world for farmed animals through positive, people-centered activism.

CAN is not about yelling at strangers, shaming people for where they are in their journey, or trying to “win” arguments. Psychological and sociological research consistently shows that people are far more likely to change when they feel understood, encouraged, and inspired when they don’t feel attacked or judged. That’s why CAN activists lead with compassion.

We believe activism can be effective and welcoming. Serious and joyful. Strategic and fun.

It doesn’t matter if you’re newly vegan, longtime veg, vegan-curious, introverted, outgoing, artistic, organized, or simply someone who wants to make a positive difference for animals, CAN helps you turn compassion into meaningful action.

What Makes CAN Different?

CAN is built around the idea that social change happens through connection, and the idea that every positive conversation plants a seed. Each welcome interaction helps normalize plant-based living. Every encouraging outreach action helps people imagine a more compassionate way forward.

Instead of confrontation, CAN focuses on:

  • Positive engagement
  • Compassionate communication
  • Encouragement over judgment
  • Meeting people where they are
  • Building community and connection
  • Creating activism people actually enjoy participating in

Sustainable activism should not leave people burnt out, angry, or hopeless. It should empower people and inspire them to keep showing up for animals. CAN activists know that changing hearts and minds is a long game, and kindness is one of the most powerful tools we have.

Why Advocacy Matters

Animals cannot advocate for themselves within systems built to exploit them. Most people never see the realities of animal agriculture, and many have simply never been encouraged to think critically about how animals are treated or how easy plant-based living can be today.

That’s why compassionate activism matters. When we share information with empathy and authenticity, we create opportunities for growth and reflection. Activists help people move closer to their values instead of pushing them away.

By joining CAN, you become part of a national movement working to:

  • Normalize vegan living and plant-based eating
  • Help people discover compassionate alternatives
  • Educate the public about the realities of animal agriculture
  • Increase access to plant-based options in schools, workplaces, and communities
  • Build supportive vegan and veg-friendly communities
  • Create positive cultural change for animals

No action is too small. A single conversation, event, post, or outreach interaction can influence someone for years.

Activism That Fits Your Strengths

There is no single “right” way to advocate for animals. CAN helps people find the type of activism that feels authentic, sustainable, and fulfilling for them. Some activists love public outreach and tabling. Others prefer organizing events behind the scenes. Some create social media content, write articles, design graphics, photograph events, or help coordinate logistics.

There is room for all kinds of talents within the movement.

CAN volunteers contribute skills such as:

  • Writing and editing
  • Photography and videography
  • Graphic design
  • Public speaking
  • Translation
  • Event planning and logistics
  • Social media outreach
  • Community organizing
  • Research and educational support
  • Recruiting and volunteer coordination

Whether you have years of experience or none at all, CAN helps you build confidence and develop your advocacy skills in a supportive environment.

What CAN Activists Do

CAN members participate in a wide variety of positive outreach and advocacy efforts, including:

  • Food sampling and outreach tables
  • Leafleting and educational conversations
  • Vegan community events
  • Social media activism
  • Library and school outreach
  • Phone and text outreach
  • Advocacy for plant-based options in local institutions

Some activists volunteer a few hours a month. Others become deeply involved organizers in their local communities. Every contribution matters.

A Community That Supports You

One of the most important parts of CAN is community. Activism can feel isolating without support, especially in a world where compassion for animals is still often minimized and contentious . CAN connects you with like-minded people who care deeply and want to create change together.

Inside the CAN community, activists can:

  • Share ideas and success stories
  • Ask questions and learn from others
  • Find local and online opportunities
  • Access outreach tools and educational materials
  • Attend trainings and events
  • Build friendships with compassionate advocates across the country

CAN is designed to help activists feel encouraged, energized, and supported — not overwhelmed.

Resources to Help You Take Action

CAN members also gain access to FARM’s growing Resource Library, including:

  • Outreach guides and talking points
  • Advocacy tips grounded in effective communication
  • Printable handouts and educational materials
  • Step-by-step action guides
  • Event planning resources
  • Training materials and best practices

Everything is designed to help activists communicate effectively, confidently, and compassionately.

What makes compassionate activism effective?

No one likes being yelled at. Humans want to feel understood. When we approach people with compassion and understanding, they are more likely to approach us the same way.

How do I get started with my first action?

Sign up or reach out to us at yeswecan@farmusa.org. Let us know your idea and what support you might need!

Is CAN focused on animal rights, vegan outreach, or both?

Both! With over 90% of animals killed per year because of animal agriculture. CAN focuses on animals used for food. Because we believe that if people can change the way they eat, the rest of the changes to a vegan lifestyle come easily. This means that our outreach is a blend of animal rights, vegan, and intersectional messaging.
